The Jest

Jesting decides great things
Stronglier, and better
Oft than earnest can.

Translation:
John Milton (1608-1674)

RIDICULUM ACRI
FORTIUS ET MELIUS MAGNAS
PLERUMQUE SECAT RES.

Horace, Satires 1.10. lines 14-15

Many comedians can. I'm sure that's why satire is so popular here as well as the late-night talk shows.

Comedy is definitely an art. There are those who do it well and those who... well, don't.

Was there not a tale of a king who would behead the court jester if that jester was unable to make the king laugh? I seem to recall bits and pieces, but can't remember the whole story, let alone the source...

Reminds me, too, of the Emperor's New Clothes. Very funny.
